BioStem Workshop at PMES 2024

A modern educational tool for research and innovation in the field of molecular biology and personalised medicine

15:00am – 17:00pm • May 9

Precision Nexus Stage @ PrecisionMed Exhibition & Summit, Dubai World Trade Centre.

Personalized Medicine holds promise to revolutionize the provision of modern healthcare, optimizing medical decision-making based on a person’s unique genomic profile. One of the major bottlenecks in the implementation of personalized medicine into routine healthcare is the poor healthcare professionals’ genomics education and low level of genomics awareness among the general public.

In this workshop, we will present the BioSTEM concept, an innovative research and educational tool for primary, elementary and high-school students, which includes optimized, online, learning sessions, additional audio-visual supportive material allowing direct communication with the involved students and educators and alternative learning approaches (internet-based gaming and comics), touching upon the fields of Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Personalised Medicine.

This innovative theoretical training is accompanied by hands-on practical sessions that includes experimentation using a portable molecular biology laboratory to familiarize students with notions related to genetics of physiological traits and diseases. This activity runs successfully since 2016 and has contributed in the education of more than 5500 students and over 50 teachers in more than 30 cities in 4 countries.

Our data show that the BioSTEM approach contributed in raising genomics knowledge to the students involved. Overall, BioSTEM is an innovative educational tool that has already contributed to significantly enrich genomics knowledge among students. Our approach can be readily replicated to other countries with the vision to generate genomic-literate citizens.
